Celebrating National Poetry Month in April

Robin Sales, our Library Director, asked me if we could do something special for National Poetry Month.  Sure, I said.  Well, we will be celebrating in a big way with POETRY Alive!  Montpelier Alive and KHL are working to present a project highlighting Vermont poets by posting or painting poems in storefronts and all around the library.  Some of the poets are famous - Galway Kinnell, Jane Shore, Ellen Bryant Voigt and others are your neighbors - high school students to older folks living around town.  We have poems from more than 85 poets whose work will be on display.  We're printing a guide to let you know where the poems are located.

Read more about this project at Phayvanh Leukhamhan's website.   Phayvanh is one of the coordinators of this project.  She and Ryan Deery, a Vista member working at KHL are been invaluable in organizing POETRY Alive!  You can catch the two of them, Robin Sakes, and Suzanne Eikenberry, Executive Director of Montpelier Alive tomorrow on Main Street posting poems from Montpelier High School in the old Capital Video storefront. This is a sneak peak of what's to come.

Vermont College of Fine Arts helped recruit poets for us and will also have a poetry reading on April 23, 2010 in conjuction with ART Walk.  More on that later.

Town Meeting Day

We're happy to report that Calais, East Montpelier, Montpelier, and Worcester residents voted yes to support the Kellogg-Hubbard Library!  I haven't heard yet from Berlin and Worcester. Thank you everyone!

*Update*  It appears that Berlin has also voted to support the Kellogg-Hubbard Library!

Town Meeting Day in Montpelier

This year the Kellogg-Hubbard Library's request for funding from the city of Montpelier is in a different place than in recent years.  Our entire funding request is in one place - Article 10.  None of it is in the city budget - this is the change.  This decision was made by the city council. Also, we were notified by the city that our funding request was in Article 9 so our newspaper ads asked voters to vote yes on Article 9.  It turns out that our request is Article 10.  Please support the library by voting yes on Article 10!  Our request is level funded - the exact same amount as last year. Thank you for your support!

Let it snow!

The library closed early today - at 5pm - because of the snow.  This evening's program, China: Economy vs Environment with Montreal political scientist and China expert Loic Tasse,  will be re-scheduled at a later date. We'll be looking at the weather report for tomorrow, too.  Ron Krupp's program is scheduled for tomorrow night. We make decisions about program cancellation by 1pm the day of the program and post it on our website and also on Facebook.  Did you know that you can become a fan of the Kellogg-Hubbard Library on Facebook?  
If you want books and other materials we recommend that you come earlier in the day tomorrow - just in case we close early again.

First Wednesdays Program: This week, Wednesday at 7pm,  David Schutz will talk about the State House and its political, architectural and cultural significance and tell stories of its past, its recent renovations and its central place in the hearts of Vermonters.

Vermont READS! 2010
We have copies of the book, The Day of the Pelican by Katherine Paterson.  This is the new Vt Humanities Council VT READS book.  Katherine has just been named National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature!

Holiday Closings

The Library is closed on December 24, 25, 26, 27 and we will re-open on Monday, December 28 at 10am.  Happy Holidays to all of our patrons!  Enjoy the snow.

6th Annual Onion River Century Ride

Hopefully you've been out on your bike, climbing hills, and enjoying the rural roads of Vermont. This Saturday, July 25, 2009, you can hurry on down to the Montpelier Rec Field on Elm Street and register to ride in the Onion River Century Ride. We added a shorter loop, 23.7 miles, for those of us who are not ready yet to ride 68 or 111 miles in one day! The entry fee is $65 and you can register at 7:30am at the Rec Field.

The official start of the race is at 8:30am with a police escort through town and to the roundabout at Walker Motors. After that you're on your own on Rte 2 to East Montpelier where you'll pick up Rte 14 to all three loops. Each loop is color-coordinated so you follow the arrow signs with your color. The 24 mile loop turns left onto Factory Street in North Montpelier and winds itself over to the Adamant Coop for the food and drink stop. The 68 mile loop heads to Hardwick, then Morrisville to Rte 12 back to Montpelier. The longest loop continues past Hardwick to Barton, Irasburg, North Wolcott, Morrisville then down RTE 12 to Montpelier. All rides start and end at the Montpelier Rec Field. A delicious end-of-ride BBQ will be waiting for you!
